When the Law Says You Must Act

The Control of Noise at Work Regulations 2005 set three exposure levels. Our noise survey tells you exactly where your workers sit. Read the regulations explained.

80 dB(A) / 135 dB(C) peak

Lower exposure action value

You must assess the risk, give workers information and training, and make hearing protection available.

85 dB(A) / 137 dB(C) peak

Upper exposure action value

You must reduce exposure as far as reasonably practicable, mark hearing protection zones and make protection compulsory.

87 dB(A) / 140 dB(C) peak

Exposure limit value

Must never be exceeded, taking hearing protection into account.

Common Questions

Do I need a noise risk assessment?

If anyone in your workplace is likely to be exposed at or above 80 dB(A) on a daily or weekly basis, the Control of Noise at Work Regulations 2005 require a noise risk assessment. A good rule of thumb: if people have to raise their voices to talk at about two metres apart, or use noisy tools or machines for more than half an hour a day, you probably need one.

What's the difference between a noise survey and a noise risk assessment?

A noise survey is the measurement: recording sound levels and workers' exposure on site. The noise risk assessment uses those results to identify who is at risk, what the law requires and what you need to do. We do both on the same visit and deliver them as one report.

How much does a noise risk assessment cost?

It depends on the size of the site, the number of tasks and how much monitoring is needed. Most surveys take between half a day and five days on site. Call or send the form and we'll give you a tailored, fixed quote.

Will you beat another company's quote?

Send us any written quote you already have and we'll aim to beat it, as long as it covers the same thing: the same survey time, personal dosimetry where needed and a full written noise risk assessment. If a cheaper quote leaves something out, we'll tell you what's missing.

How long does it take to get the report?

We aim for a fast turnaround. The report is written up as soon as the survey is done and sent to you as a PDF, with clear results and a list of actions in order of priority.

Will the survey disrupt work?

No. We measure noise during normal working conditions, so your team carries on as usual. Workers may be asked to wear a small personal noise dosimeter on their shoulder during the shift.

How often should a noise assessment be reviewed?

Whenever something changes, such as new machinery, new processes, longer shifts or a change in layout, and regularly in any case. We can tell you when your assessment is due for review.

Which areas do you cover?

We cover London and Surrey from our base in Thames Ditton, including Kingston, Richmond, Twickenham, Staines, Weybridge, Walton-on-Thames, Windsor, Westminster, Southwark, the City of London and Canary Wharf.
